Team Canada Women's History

*Updated December, 2009

Historically, the Canadian Women’s National Team has consistently been ranked between 12th-24th in the world, and have participated in the 1976, 1984, and 1996 Olympic Games as well as the World Championships in 1974, 1978, 1982, 1986, 1990 and 2002. The women’s national team is currently ranked 24th (as of November 30, 2009) in the world.

In 2007, the National Women's Team competed in 26 matches between June and December at events such as the Pan Am Cup in Mexico, Universiade Games in Thailand, and the NORCECA Continental Championship in Winnipeg. The team’s season culminated December 2008 at the NORCECA Zone Olympic Qualifier in Mexico where it fell one match short of Olympic Qualification, losing to world #3 ranked Cuba in the tournament’s final match.

2008 served primarily as a training season to prepare athletes for the future, with competitions in June at the annual Pan Am Cup and an exhibition series held in Winnipeg in August against the Denso Airybees, a professional club team from Japan.

2009 began a new era for the Women’s National Volleyball Team in several ways. The Women’s National Team hired a new Head Coach, Arnd Ludwig (Lupo), to lead them through this next Olympic cycle through to 2012. A new group of young motivated athletes also take over the program from veterans such as Annie Levesque, Emily Cordonier and Melissa Raymond, who have recently retired from the national team program. Players such as Jennifer Hinze, Ashley Voth and Julie Young now join young veterans such as Tammy Mahon, Tiffany Dodds and Tasha Holness, to bring the team to new levels of performance within our NORCECA Zone and world competitions.

In 2009, the team successfully achieved their goal of qualifying for the 2010 FIVB World Championship, at the final NORCECA Qualifier in Mexico in August.  The main focus of the Women's National Team will be to perform well at the World Championship and to finish in the top 16.  The team will also use this Championship as a stepping stone towards achieving their ultimate goal of qualifying for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London.
