Edward Toews’ accomplishments as an official span 35 years. He was one of two of the first officials in Canada to receive his International status in 1973. His career as an International official jump started early with the World Championships in Mexico City in 1974 and continued from there.

Ed officiated at almost every major volleyball competition possible, including the Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea in 1988.  He first officiated at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg in 1967, and worked at each edition of the Pan Am Games until 1999.

Ed held the National Officials Chairperson office from 1969-72, while at the same time acting as the Manitoba Officials Chairperson from 1967-73.  He was also Manitoba Volleyball Official’s Association assigner for many years, as well as having been a member of the International Officials Committee from 1989 to the early 2000s. From 1967, the year he received his national badge, through to 2001, Ed refereed at at least one National Championship per year.

Ed was granted lifetime membership in the Volleyball Canada Officials Committee (1989) and the Manitoba Volleyball Officials Association (1990), and was the second referee to be inducted into the Volleyball Canada Hall of Fame.
