Wayne Hellquist began his longstanding involvement with volleyball in Canada as President of the Saskatchewan Volleyball Association (SVA), going onto the Board and subsequent vice-presidency of the Canadian Volleyball Association (CVA).

During his tenure with CVA, Wayne was Chair of the National Teams Committee, established the first Marketing and Fundraising Committee and oversaw the operation of Sportquip, the sporting goods wholesaler which supported the CVA. He was Head of Delegation for a number of international competitions including 1983 FISU, 1985 FISU, the 1982 Commonwealth Championships in England and numerous Canada Cups and cross Canada tours.  Wayne was also instrumental in the relocation of the National Women’s Team to Regina and served as a member of the Management Committee for the Centre during the team’s stay in Regina.

Wayne was appointed to the Board of the Canadian Olympic Association (COA) as the Director from Volleyball.  He held a number of roles with the COA, including member of the Executive, Interim President, Chair of the Marketing Committee, the Strategic Planning Committee, the Olympic Education Committee, Vice-Chair fo the Education Program and facilitating numerous Canadian Olympic Academies.

In 2000, Wayne served as the Chef de Mission for the Canadian Paralympic team in Sydney, which started his involvement with disabled volleyball in Canada and worldwide.  He served as a member and Chair of the Disabled Volleyball Committee for a number of years and was later elected as the Marketing Director for the World Organization for Volleyball for the Disabled.

He has also served as Chair of the High Performance Committee of Commonwealth Games Canada and a member of the True Sport Secretariat.
