Canada featured in this weekend’s Wagner Memorial Tournament

Canada plays Russia, Poland and France in Poland

Canada’s senior men’s team is in Poland for Jerzy Wagner Tournament, which will be held in Krakow from August 11 to 13 and will also feature Poland, France, and Russia – all top 10 teams in the current FIVB World Ranking.

UPDATE :

  • Canada vs Russia 1-3 (23-25, 27-29, 25-22, 17-25)
  • Poland vs Canada 3-0 (36-34, 25-20, 26-24)
  • Canada vs France 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-22)

The Wagner Memorial Tournament began in 2003, and is held in the memory of longtime Polish coach Hubert Jerzy Wagner, who won the 1974 FIVB Men’s World Championship, the Olympic gold in 1976 and silver medals at the European Championships in 1975 and 1983. Canada last played in this invitational tournament in 2006.

The 2017 Canadian squad features 12 players who won the bronze medal at this year’s World League Group 1 finals. Canada, led by former Polish National Team head coach Stephane Antiga, recently gained two spots in the world ranking, up to sixth from eighth after the team’s impressive World League performance.

The tournament in Poland does not count toward world ranking points, but is helping Canada prepare for the upcoming NORCECA Continental World Championship qualifier held in Colorado Springs, US, in late September.

Canada’s first match is Aug. 11 against Russia, a team looking for revenge after its World League loss to Canada in Brazil in July. Official web site: http://fundacjawagnera.pl

NOTE: The event is shown on Polish TV via www.polsatsport.pl, but we are currently unable to confirm if the matches will be web cast in Canada.
