Canada is currently ranked 10th in the world, and Calgary will have the last chance to see the men’s national team play live before the upcoming Olympic Games in Japan. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to experience international volleyball at its finest.
Volleyball Canada will hold its annual convention and Hall of Fame induction ceremony in conjunction with the VNL matches in Calgary. The city previously hosted the men’s team in FIVB World League pool play in 2015, but this is the first time Volleyball Nations League has been hosted in Alberta.
About Volleyball Nations League:
Starting on May 19 for the women and May 22 for the men, the 2020 VNL retains a similar calendar to last year, with men playing over the weekends and women during the week in pools of four teams each until each has played against every other in a single round robin tournament.
Calgary hosts week 5 (pool 17) of men’s VNL, while Ottawa, Ontario, will play host to the women’s VNL on week 3 (pool 9).
The top five teams at the end of the preliminary round join the hosts of the VNL Finals to fight for the podium positions. For the finals, both genders will play from July 1-5. The women’s finals will be held in Nanjing, China, and the men’s finals will be held in Turin, Italy.
Last year in Chicago, Russia beat hosts USA for the men’s gold medal, while Poland outplayed Brazil for bronze. In the women’s competition in Nanjing, USA overcame Brazil in the final and hosts China picked up bronze with a win over Turkey.
The whole competition totals 260 matches – 130 per gender across the almost two-month duration of the tournament.
