Canada earns first victory in Qualifier finale, finishes third

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, January 12, 2020 – In their third and final match in the NORCECA Women’s Tokyo Qualification Tournament, the Canadian women came out on top of Mexico by a score of 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-23). They finish the tournament 1-2, coming in third place.

In a match between winless teams, the Canadians recovered from dropping the first set and went on to dominate the next two. The contest concluded when Mexico’s Ivone Martinez crashed her serve into the net.

Said head coach, Tom Black: "We are disappointed with the results. We had some tough matches against Puerto Rico and Dominican that didn’t go our way. We knew Mexico was a strong team, and it can be difficult to play in these third place matches when the goal you’re chasing has already slipped.... The team did a good job of bringing the energy and competitiveness necessary to close on a better note.”

Despite the win, Team Canada missed their last chance to qualify for the 2020 Olympics in this tournament.

Just as they had in the two games prior, Alexa Gray (Calgary, AB) and Kiera Van Ryk (Surrey BC) stood out as the best Canadian scorers with 26 and 23 points, respectively.
