SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, July 10, 2018 – Canada's powerful serves helped the team defeat host Dominican Republic 3-0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-20) in the decisive match of Pool A of the Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup on Tuesday night.

Both teams were undefeated at 2-0 and 10 points going into today’s match; with the Canadian side coming out with the best record among pool winners with the maximum 15 points.  The victory also ensures Canada a spot at the Pan American Games in 2019 (top five teams earn a berth).

Today, Alexa Gray led Canada with 18 points and Kiera Van Ryk added 14, including six aces. Autumn Bailey contributed seven points, and Jennifer Cross and Emily Maglio each had six points for Canada.

Brayelin Martinez had 12 points as the best Dominican scorer and Gina Mambru added eight in the losing cause.

Canada out served Dominican Republic 11-5 and also held the advantage in the blocking department 6-4.

“It was one of the best games we have played,” said Canada’s head coach Marcello Abbondanza “It was one spectacular victory, which was executed very cleanly.”

Dominican Republic’s women’s team is ranked ninth in the FIVB world ranking, and Canada sits at 19th.

Canada advances directly to the semis, which will be played on July 13.
