Team Canada Athletes Overseas

After the excitement of the FIVB World Championships for both the men and women early this fall, many of our Canadian indoor players head to various professional leagues around the world.

This year Olympian Gord Perrin made the move to VC Belogorie, a Russian professional volleyball club based in Belgorod which is participating in the Russian Volleyball Super League. He’s the only Canadian National Team member playing in Russia.

Stephen Maar is the only men’s team member in Italy this season with Power Volley Milano (SuperLega).

Several players are in Poland, including Nick Hoag, Graham Vigrass and Sharone Vernon-Evans. Middle-blocker Vigrass and opposite hitter Vernon-Evans (in photo) joined Onico Warsaw, which is coached by former Canadian men’s coach, Stephane Antiga.

France has the most number of Canadians playing in their leagues, and Germany is also a popular destination. And although Gavin Schmitt didn’t play in this year’s Worlds, he’s still playing professionally in Greece.

On the women’s side, Alexa Gray is in Italy (Pomi Casalmaggiore), Jennifer Cross in Bulgaria and libero Jessie Niles is in Austria, just to name a few of the women’s international transfers.

Several member of the women’s team are closer to home - Kiera Van Ryk at UBC; Anna Feore at the University of Toronto; Emily Maglio at the University of Hawaii; Sarah Chase at St Mary's College of California, and Kelsey Veltman at Western University in London, Ont.
