List of Inductees 2003
Walter received his official’s certification in 1959 and was active until 2001. His involvement reached beyond the Ontario borders across the country and internationally for several years. He and Anton Furlani were the first two international officials in Ontario.
Walter was a mentor and role model for hundreds of younger officials for decades. He was truly respectful of the sport and gracious of what the game provided to his life experiences.
After graduating from the Radio College of Canada, Walter worked for the CBC from 1958 to 1993. The last 5 years were as technical producer for Hockey Night in Canada. Although a very private and modest man, he received many awards and recognition while working for the CBC.
Walter’s proudest moment in volleyball was receiving his international badge after officiating a match between Korea and Cuba in Uruguay. His evaluator asked him after the match “How did you do?” to which Walter replied, “I made two mistakes”. The evaluator said “you are right, congratulations you are now an international referee.”
