John Paulsen has contributed tremendously to the sport of volleyball in Canada as a player, as a builder and as a coach. He first started playing volleyball in 1967 and has played consistently every season for some 40 years. He spent 8 years as a member of the Canadian National Men’s team and was a member of the 1976 Canadian Olympic Team. Following his retirement from the team, John turned his attention to serving as the business manager for the team, moving on to Team Coordinator when the team relocated to Calgary.
Following the team’s successful 4th place finish in Los Angeles in 1984, John took on the job of facility manager and later the Director of Operations at the University of Calgary. He also helped coach the National Team, working with the B team for four years and helping out at practice and with selection camps and player identification for the senior team.
John helped create four club programs including the Winnipeg Volleyball Club, Calgary Older and Wiser, Calgary Volleyball Club Masters, the Aces Volleyball and the Cal Vol Volleyball League in Calgary. He won 15 medals at the Supervolley tournament in Saskatoon as a player and coach and more than a dozen provincial championships in three provinces: Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. John has competed in 5 US Open Championships, the World Masters Games in Edmonton and the Huntsman Games in Utah.
