Canada finishes seventh at Women’s U21 Pan American Cup
June 13, 2022: Canada defeated Dominican Republic in straight sets, 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-22) to finish in seventh place at the 2022 Women’s Pan American Cup in Baja California Sur, Mexico.
Canada finished the event with a 3-2 record. After dropping their first two games 3-0 versus Argentina and the United States, Canada won their next three games without losing a set, beating Costa Rica, Honduras, and finally Dominican Republic.
“We knew we were facing a strong team like Dominican Republic, but we did a good job executing our game plan,” Canadian head coach Carolyn O’Dwyer told NORCECA. “It was an awesome job from the athletes. Two things stood out, a good job from the service line putting a lot of pressure on them and getting them out of system, and we also did a good job attacking high and deep and challenging them in some difficult digs.”
Madyson Saris led both teams in scoring in the final match, collecting 21 points. Team captain Emoni Bush was second for Canada with 15 points.
“We prepared well for them, we saw lots of film and we did a good job putting what we watched into the game,” said Saris. "Generally speaking, it was a great experience for everyone playing internationally."
Saris was also named the 2nd best spiker and server of the tournament.
Final Ranking: 1. United States; 2. Argentina; 3. Mexico; 4. Chile; 5. Cuba; 6. Puerto Rico; 7. Canada; 8. Dominican Republic; 9. Costa Rica; 10. Honduras.
