Men’s team wraps up first VNL weekend of 2021

May 30, 2021: Canada ended its three-game Volleyball Nations League (May 28 to June 27, 2021) starting weekend on a high note, despite a loss to world number-one ranked Brazil in four sets 1-3 (17-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-27).

It was Brazil’s first set loss of VNL 2021 and Canadian Sharone Vernon-Evans (Scarborough, ON) led all scorers with 24 points today.

"In the first two sets, it was very difficult because Brazil were serving very well and they are a team that doesn't make many mistakes, so it's really hard to play against them. If you make mistakes you are going to lose," said 2016 Olympian Nicholas Hoag (Sherbrooke, QC). "After the second set we really played well. In the end, the small details made the difference."

Canada came off a decisive win over Argentina 3-0 on Saturday, but an opener loss against North American rival, the United States, also in straight sets.

On Monday, the Canadian women’s team resumes its first-ever VNL campaign against Turkey at 10 am EDT. All Canadian matches are streamed live at www.cbcsports.ca

Volleyball Nations League 2021 is contested in a “bubble” in Rimini, Italy.
