Beach Brief: Pool Play Continues at Worlds

Nov. 16, 2026: Canadian teams continued their pool play matches on Sunday at the 2025 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship in Adelaide, Australia.

Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson are now 2-0, with their second win coming today over Katja Stam and Raïsa Schoon of Netherlands 2-0 (21-15, 24-22).

"We were prepared to be tested today, this team is strong with great ball control, but we’re really proud of the result and we are just continuing to fight. We want to be in these situations because it allows us to bring out everything we’ve trained for," explained Wilkerson. "It’s been really cool to see the spectrum of what we can play, going from an unfamiliar team yesterday focusing on ourselves, and now here today having to execute a lot of strategies and game-time moments."

The Canadian 2024 Olympic silver medalist pair plays on centre court on Monday vs. Vieira/Chamereau of France.

Canada’s women’s entry in Pool I also saw pool action today. Earlier, Donlin/Denaburg of USA defeated Canada’s Lea Monkhouse and Marie-Alex Bélanger 2-1 (21-16, 19-21, 15-7). Canada is 0-2 and plays New Zealand next on Monday.

On the men’s side, Canada’s Sam Schachter and Jonny Pickett also lost in a tie-break to Capogrosso T./Capogrosso N. of Argentina 2-1 (19-21, 21-17, 15-9).

"We just lost a bit of our rhythm at the end, which was an unfortunate situation," said veteran Team Canada member Schachter. "There were some missed connections and they made plays as well. We made aggressive mistakes trying to attack them and attack their block. We’re proud of that and that was the game plan. I just feel we need to be a little sharper next time because we were well within reach of taking that match."

Final day of pool play (Nov. 17, local time):
5 pm: Schachter/Pickett CAN [35] vs. Mondlane/Mungoi MOZ [38]
7:30 pm: Polley/MacDonald NZL [33] vs. Monkhouse/Bélanger CAN [40]
9 pm: Melissa/Brandie CAN [10] vs. Vieira/Chamereau FRA [15]

Note: Times listed are Australian Central Daylight Time, which is 15 and a half hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time.

The pool winners, the pool runners-up and the best four of the third-placed teams (first ranked by match points, then by set ratio, then by rally point ratio and lastly by the tournament seeding) advance straight to the sixteenth finals. The remaining eight third-placed teams in the pools advance to the first knockout round, called "the lucky loser round."

VBTV offers worldwide coverage of all matches, and in Canada CBC Sports streams matches live as well.
