Beach men and women are golden for Canada in Tobago
TOBAGO – Canadians Sam Schachter (Richmond Hill, ON) and Sam Pedlow (Barrie, ON) captured the gold medal with a 21-18, 21-19 victory over Cubans Nivaldo Diaz and Sergio Gonzalez in the men’s final of the Trinidad & Tobago Beach Volleyball Tournament.
It was the first victory of the year for the new Canadian combination frustrating the powerful Olympic Cuban duo who were seeking a fourth NORCECA gold of the year. Schachter is a 2016 Olympian, who teamed up with Pedlow after the retirement of veteran Josh Binstock this fall.
After only have a short time frame to build our systems, it was great to come away with a gold medal at such an important event. Our road to the finals (at this tournament) was the toughest of any other team, along the way having to beat both Cuban teams who knocked Canada out of the Continental Cup (Olympic qualifier earlier this year). I think in these two matches our team displayed what we are capable of. It's very exciting!
Fellow Canadians Melissa Humana-Paredes (Toronto) and Jamie Broder (Victoria, BC) prevailed over Kimberly DiCello and Summer Ross of United States in an exciting match to claim the women’s gold medal at this final event of the 2016 NORCECA Circuit at Turtle Beach, also on Sunday.
Humana-Paredes and 2016 Olympian Broder, playing together for this tournament, came back from one set down to get the three-set victory (17-21, 21-16, 15-12) in 1 hour and six minutes.
It was the second victory in a row and third overall for Broder in Trinidad & Tobago. She had won here in 2013 and 2015 playing with Kristina Valjas. Humana-Paredes won in 2014 with Taylor Pischke.
The event was the 11th and final tournament of the 2016 NORCECA Circuit that included stops in Guatemala, Mexico (2), Costa Rica, Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic, Canada (North Bay, ON), Cuba, Puerto Rico, St Lucia and Trinidad & Tobago.
Canada had four team entered in Tobago: Grant O’Gorman and Mike Plantinga were sixth overall; and Julie Gordon and Brandie Wilkerson were fifth.
