Recap: Toronto’s Beach Nationals Weekend

August 22, 2024: This past weekend, Volleyball Canada’s Beach National Championships, presented by Mikasa, took place at Ashbridge’s Bay in Toronto, where more than 300 youth and senior teams competed for the title of national champion. To raise the stakes, the senior men’s and women’s teams were playing for their share of a $25,000 purse prize.

This year in the senior men’s final, a new national champion was crowned with Max Losier/Robert Kemp facing off against Guillaume Rivest/Yoan David. Besting Rivest/David in a 2-set sweep, Losier/Robert took home the gold.

In the men’s third-place match, Markus Law-Heese/Jonathan Pickett brought home bronze after a nail biting three-set battle (22-20, 19-21, 15-7) against Rouzbeh Rahnavard/Tynan Gannett.

On the senior women’s side, defending national champions Marie-Alex Belanger/Lea Monkhouse took on Mikayla Law-Heese/Ruby Sorra. After losing the first set, things weren’t looking great for the defending champions. However, in the end, Belanger/Monkhouse snatched gold in a dramatic three-setter (12-21, 21-19, 15-11).

McBain/Ozee brought home bronze with a two-set win (21-18, 21-15) over Roskic/Kok. In case you missed any of the action, a stream of the senior medal rounds can be found on the Volleyball Canada YouTube page.

The other youth players, ranging from 14U to 18U, competed for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards. Full brackets and winners can be found here. Plus, here’s a link to a stream of the youth medal rounds.

Beach Nationals in Toronto featured a total of 312 youth and senior teams; however, the action doesn’t end there. From August 23rd to 25th, a 14U-16U national championships will take place at Spanish Banks East in Vancouver, featuring a total of 110 youth teams. Finally, the University & College Beach National Championships will head back to Ashbridge’s Bay from August 31st – September 1, 2024.
