Canada ends its World Championship with a win
Oct. 08, 2022: Canada’s team at the FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Championship in Lodz, Poland, ended its run at the tournament today on a high note with a win over Dominican Republic.
Dominican Republic came out swinging, winning the first set but ultimately fell in five: 2-3 (25-18, 23-25, 17-25, 27-25, 7-15) on Saturday night.
Unlike last night’s loss to Poland, also in five sets, today Canada led in blocking (15-5), and scored more points from Dominican errors (25-21). The Dominican team had more attack points (65-63) and held the advantage in points from the service line (8-5).
“I think it showed a lot of character coming back from last night’s game, when we lost in five to Poland. We were a little bit lackadaisical in the first set, but we stepped it up and our servers did an amazing job,” said Head Coach Shannon Winzer.
“It was a really good way to finish this tournament. We’ve played some good volleyball and we deserve to finish this way. We’ve shown that we can play with the best teams in the world.”
Dominican opposite Gaila González led all scorers with 28 points; Kiera Van Ryk led Canada’s team effort with 24 points.
"I think we believed in each other and really came together tonight. We almost didn’t look at the score and just played for ourselves,” said Canada’s libero Arielle Palermo. "We said we wanted to wrap up this tournament with a win and that’s what we did today."
Canada narrowly missed advancing to the quarterfinals, finishing fifth in the pool (top four advance after phase 2). It was the first time in recent history that the women’s team advanced beyond the first round. Canada also gained valuable ranking points.
