Win sends Canada to beach quarterfinals

August 6, 2024: On Monday evening in Paris, Canada’s Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson put together an impressive match to advance at the Olympic women’s beach volleyball tournament.

The victory came over second-seeded team Kristin Nuss and Taryn Kloth of USA in two sets (21-19, 21-18).

"We knew we were going to play this team at some point. They are one of the best teams in the world. We thought it would be later in the tournament because we both deserve a shot at those medals but when we are put in those situations, we are ready to respond," said Wilkerson in a post-match interview.

The match did not disappoint the crowds at the Eiffel Tower stadium, as the Canadians came back from a deficit to win the close first set. In the second, it was USA who evened the score up at 18, but failed to score after that. The win secured Canada's spot in the quarters.

"There are point swings on each side. You just have to stay in it and control what you can control and expect… they’re going to get their points, we are going to get our points and it’s just who’s going to be the last one standing out there."

Canada will face Daniela Alvarez and Tania Moreno of Spain, who upset Katja Stam and Raisa Schoon of the Netherlands to advance, in the quarterfinals on Aug. 07 at 5 pm local time.

Canada’s men’s team (Schachter/Dearing) finished 17th after withdrawing due to injury; and the women’s team of Bansley/Bukovec finished in 19th position.

Since the spectacle of the opening ceremonies, volleyball and beach volleyball have played to packed houses at Paris 2024.
