2020 Tokyo Olympic Games Schedule Set
February 13, 2020 – The schedules for the men’s and women’s indoor volleyball tournaments have been confirmed for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. The competition is set to take place from July 24 to August 9, 2020, in the capital of Japan with the volleyball matches being held at the new Ariake Arena.
The tournament will bring a historic element to it while making history itself. Volleyball was first introduced at the Olympics at the Tokyo Games in 1964, now returning 56 years later. In 2020, and for the first time in Olympic history, the competition will conclude with the women’s gold medal game on August 9, one day after the men’s gold medal game.
The teams are broken into two pools and will face off in a round robin, with the top four of each group moving on to the Quarterfinals on August 3 and 4. The winner of each pool will compete against the fourth-place team from the other pool. The teams in second-place and third-place will have a draw to determine their opponents from the other pool. The Semifinals are on August 6, setting up the gold and bronze medal games on August 8.
The Canadian men sit in Pool A with Iran, Italy, Japan, Poland, and Venezuela. Canada kicks off the tournament with a preliminary match versus Rio 2016 silver- medalists Italy on July 25. They’ll have a day off between each game, facing host nation Japan on July 27, playing Iran on July 29, Venezuela on July 31, and playing their final round-robin game August 2 against Poland.
The Canadian men’s team qualified for the final spot in the tournament after a first-place finish at the 2020 NORCECA Men’s Tokyo Qualification Tournament in Vancouver, British Columbia. The women didn’t qualify this year, but already have their sights set on 2024.
