Beach Bronze at NORCECA Tour Stop

Sept. 29: Canada won a bronze medal at the ninth stop of the NORCECA Continental Beach Volleyball Tour, which wrapped up Sunday at Los Corales Beach in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

Canadians Alison McKay and Darby Dunn (CAN1) quickly defeated Marcela Araya and Eugenia Ramírez of Costa Rica 2-0 (21-12, 21-10) to win the bronze match on Sept. 28.

Puerto Rican duo María González/Allanis Navas defeated Americans Geena Urango/Mariah Whalen (USA1) 2-1 (19-21, 21-17, 15-10) to win the women’s gold medal.

Canadians Kaylee Glagau/Abbey Thorup (CAN2) finished 10th.

Canada had one entry on the men’s side. Also this weekend, Venezuela's Juliangel Vargas/Enyensser Delgado beat Canada's Rouzbeh Rahnavard/Dylan Devecseri 2-0 (21-17, 21-15) for fifth and sixth placing.

USA’s James Drost and Troy Field defeated Cuban duo Damián Gómez and Eblis Veranes 2-1 (19-21, 21-18, 15-10) to win the gold medal of the men’s tournament.

Elite 16 Rio Update

After winning their pool and sweeping Austria in the round of 12, Canada’s Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson were beaten by Brazil’s Carol Solberg and Rebecca Cavalcanti 2-0 (21-18, 21-15) on Saturday in the quarterfinals and pick up another BPT fifth-place finish.

Carol and Rebecca went on to win the Rio gold, defeating fellow Brazilians Thamela and Victoria. Cannon and Kraft of USA took the bronze medal at Rio.

Melissa and Brandie were the only Canadian entry in this tournament.
