Canada advances to U21 Pan Am Cup final
Calgary, Aug. 10, 2025: Canada will have the opportunity to go for gold in front of a home crowd after another win at the 2025 NORCECA U21 Men’s Pan American Cup at the 7 Chiefs Sportsplex & Chief Jim Starlight Centre, Tsuut’ina Nation, near Calgary.
Canada defeated Mexico 3-0 (28-26, 25-19, 25-19) Saturday evening and will play USA in the gold-medal match on Sunday.
Against Mexico, Canada led in attack points (52-17), blocks (9-5) and aces (4-3). However, Canada gave up more points due to errors (39-13).
Canada's Daniil Hershtynovich (Thornhill, ON) led all scorers with 20 points (17 kills, 2 blocks and an ace). He was followed by teammates Luke Lodewyks (La Salle, MB) and Alexander Brdarevic (Hamilton, ON) who had 10 points each on the score sheet. Jonathan Joel Hernández and Brandon Antonio Ramirez led Mexico with seven points each.
Chris Voth, Canada’s head coach, said after the match: "We came out a little tentative. Mexico was playing really well and we had to step up and match that intensity. It was great that we were able to step up to the plate and come back in the first set especially. I hope we can have a better start tomorrow. It’s a really great environment and we appreciate all the support."
USA is 5-0, while Canada is 4-1 so far in the tournament. The gold-medal match takes place at 4:30 pm local time.
Canadian setter Grant Hill, who is from Calgary, is looking forward to representing his country in front of friends and family. “It’s super exciting and it’s going to be loud tomorrow. I’ve got a lot of family coming and it’s special because it’s with Team Canada,” said Hill. "I think our team has played well, today we were a little inconsistent, but we’re pumped for the match tomorrow."
