Canada ends U21s with a win!
Aug. 30, 2025: Canada beat Brazil today 3-2 (23-25, 25-20, 26-28, 25-20, 18-16) at the 2025 FIVB Men’s U21 World Championship in Jiangmen, China.
The young Canadian squad ends on a high note, with four wins in a row and finishes 17th overall.
"I’m super proud of how the guys were able to come back and close out the fifth set against a super-talented and physical Brazil team today," said Canada’s head coach Chris Voth.
“We were a little unlucky not making it into the top half of the draw, but the guys showed incredible resilience and professionalism in winning the last four matches we played.... Throughout the tournament, the guys were able to come together and we were able to get everyone in; that’s just a testament to the grit we have and the deep bench we were able to utilize."
Against Brazil, Owen Harris led Canada's scoring with 19 points, Dawson Pratt had 16 and Zack Yewchuk added 15, including five blocks. Despite Bryan Lucas Alves da Silva’s 32 points for Brazil, Canada’s all-around effort allowed the team to comeback from being down 2-1 to seal the deal in extra points in the fifth set.
Earlier in the tournament, Team Canada was fifth in a very tight Pool B, putting Canada in contention for places 17 to 24. They then defeated Tunisa, Thailand and today Brazil in the playoffs.
Italy and Iran advanced to the U21 men's final (to be held on Sunday) after dominant semifinal victories at Jiangmen Sports Centre, also today. Iran defeated USA and Italy beat Czechia, both in 3-0 matches.
