Canada ends VNL week two with a win
June 21, 2026: Canada’s women’s team ended Volleyball Nations League week two with a dramatic five-set win in Bangkok, Thailand, on Sunday.
Punctuated by a final-point ace by team captain Emily Maglio (Coquitlam, BC), Canada beat Poland 3-2 (25-23, 21-25, 25-16, 11-25, 15-13).
Yesterday, Thailand beat Canada 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-18, 25-20), but earlier this week Canada recorded two four-set wins to end the week with a 3-1 record.
Coach Giovanni Guidetti congratulated his team on coming back after a loss on Saturday : "After yesterday I saw a team that entered in the court hungry and they wanted to win so much! This is the victory of a team that wanted to change the mood from yesterday and they did it.”
Kiera Van Ryk of Surrey, B.C. again led Canada with 26 points (20 kills, two blocks and four aces); Maglio ended up with 13 points (six attack points, six blocks and one ace).
“We all knew that we had to come out strong in the fifth – they battled and we battled,” Van Ryk told VBTV after the match. “It’s so great to see how many people could come in (to the game) today and really make a difference and that was a really big team win.”
Canada led in most stats, but still gave up more points to errors than Poland (29-16).
Overall in VNL this year, Canada has five wins (two at home in Quebec during week one) and 15 points. Women’s week three of VNL for Canada takes place in Hong Kong.
