Canada wraps up at Beach Volleyball World U19 Championships

December 10, 2021: Canada’s Emma Glagau and Ruby Sorra fell to Xolani Hodel and Kate Reilly of USA in quarterfinal action of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World U19 Championships in Phuket, Thailand, earning Canada’s top finish in the tournament of fifth place.

The Canadians plays a hard-fought final game, keeping it very close through the final two sets, ultimately falling 2-1 (21-13, 19-21, 15-12). Entering the quarterfinals, the Canadian women were 6-1, with their lone loss coming at the hands of Hodel and Reilly again. Two of those wins came in qualification games to enter the main draw.

Glagau and Sorra were joined on the women’s side by Ava Mann and Jamie Santer, who also fell to Hodel and Reilly in the round of 16. They lost their final match 0-2 (10-21, 19-21) after going 3-0 in the main draw.

On the men’s side, the pairs of Cameron Chadwick and Martin Licht and Daniil Hershtynovich and Kaden Schmidt both finished 17th, both losing in the round of 24. Chadwick and Licht finished the tournament 2-3, starting it off with an exciting, marathon first set in a 2-0 (34-32, 21-19) win in the qualification round, while Hershtynovich and Schmidt had a record of 2-2.

All four of Canada’s entries in the World U19 Championships were from Ontario and coming up through Team Ontario programming.
