Tight match with Türkiye ends Canada’s winning streak

Oct. 05, 2022: Today Türkiye ended Canada’s four-match winning record in a 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 28-26) result at the FIVB Volleyball World Championship in Lodz, Poland.

Attack points were even at 44, while Canada did better in blocking points (7-5), Türkiye was the stronger serving team (7-2) and made the most of Canada’s errors.

"We lacked a little urgency and focus at those key moments,” said Team Captain Jen Cross (Scarborough, ON). “We made mistakes at important moments and against a great team like them, it just makes it very difficult. We don’t have a match tomorrow, so we’re going to take a day to refocus and get ready for the next match.”

Turkish opposite Ebrar Karakurt led scoring with 26 points; Kiera Van Ryk (Surrey, BC) led Canada's offense with 20 points.

"I think our serve and pass broke down,” explained Canada's head coach Shannon Winzer. “The first part of the game we made a lot of service errors and it’s hard to find your rhythm when you struggle from the base line. It did pick up throughout the game, but also our first contact was difficult tonight and it’s hard to play against one of the best teams in the world when you don’t control that first contact.

"Overall, we just need to re-group and get ready for the next game. It’s a chance to refocus on the things that we know we are good at and show up for a big game against Poland.”

Canada is now 1-1 in phase 2 of the Worlds.Canada plays home-crowd favourite Poland on Friday and wraps up this second phase of the Worlds on Saturday against the Dominican Republic.
