Volleyball families create funds to give back to the sport

March 16, 2021: Volleyball Canada is honoured to announce the official launch of the Hoag Team Canada Fund and the Wong Family Fund – both created to give back to the sport for many years to come.

The Hoag fund is focused on enhancing Team Canada’s pillars of growth, success, and excellence by providing support for high-quality training and competition conditions at the men’s national team level.

“I am grateful for my time at the helm of the men’s program and want to give back and help the future generations of coaches and athletes continue to thrive and enjoy playing the game and represent Canada proudly,” explains Olympian and current men’s head coach Glenn Hoag, who with wife Donna, is father to former team member Chris Hoag and current player and 2016 Olympian Nick Hoag.

“The national team program has been a big part of our lives for a long time. It has brought us a lot of positive experiences, and we would like to give back and help give our future athletes and coaches those same opportunities.”

The Wong Family Fund was created to provide support to promising Canadian female volleyball coaches, who have the potential to coach internationally and/or for national team programs.

"Volleyball has been good to me. I have had the opportunity to see every part of our country and many parts of the world I otherwise would not have seen. Along the way, I met so many amazing people, some of whom have become life-long friends. The experiences I have been afforded are truly priceless. This fund is just a small token of my appreciation to Canadian volleyball for what it has provided me," said Hugh Wong, a B.C.- based builder member of Volleyball Canada’s Hall of Fame.

"I am hoping that the fund can contribute to increasing the number of women coaches who are capable of leading at the international level. It is called the Wong Family Fund in recognition of the support my family has provided me along my volleyball journey, even when many of them had no idea of what I was doing."

Both funds are designed to support the continuous growth of volleyball in Canada, as Chris Hoag explains: "The initiative is a way for the family to assure that some of specific needs and goals of Volleyball Canada can be reached. It is a small way in which we can say thank you to a community that has gave us incredible life experiences and lessons."
