Canadian women's team wins pool at Beach Worlds
Nov. 17, 2025: Canada’s Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson won their pool today at the 2025 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship in Adelaide, Australia.
In an exciting contest with Clémence Vieira and Aline Chamereau of France, the Canadian Olympic silver medalists managed to wrap up the match in a 2-0 (21-16, 22-20) win on centre court.
"I think they made it very difficult for us," admitted Humana-Paredes. "When scouting them we knew it was going to be a scrappy game; they’ve been playing on a high and had good momentum. We had to be clean, but I don’t think we were as clean as we were in previous games. So they tested us and I’m proud we were still able to get the W playing a little gritty and not playing our best. It’s a point of confidence for us to still be able to win when it gets a bit messy. We are going to take some good lessons tonight and take them into the playoffs.”
The Canadians, both of Toronto, ended with a 3-0 record in pool play to advance to the playoffs.
Schedule update: Melissa and Brandie play on Nov. 18 in the round of 32 - facing Davidova/Khmil of Ukraine at 10 pm local time on centre court.
Canada’s men’s team also advances after beating Mozambique (Mondlane/Mungoi) 2-0 earlier on Monday, ensuring third place in their pool.
Sam Schachter (Richmond Hill, ON) and Jonny Pickett (Wiarton, ON) now face Ruben Penninga and Matthew Immers of Netherlands at 2:30 pm local time on Tuesday to determine if they advance to the next round of playoffs.
Also on Monday, Lea Monkhouse (Mississauga, ON) and Marie-Alex Bélanger (Saint-Alphonse-Rodriguez, QC) forced New Zealand’s Polley/MacDonald to a tie-break set 2-1 (21-15, 16-21, 15-11) but unfortunately finished with a 0-3 pool record and will not advance.
“Right now it doesn’t feel great, but being able to play against the top teams in the world and being in a competitive pool was awesome,” said Monkhouse. “I learned a lot and I feel like my game throughout the three matches got a little better. I just want to keep playing and improving and growing.”
Note: Times listed are Australian Central Daylight Time, which is 15 and a half hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time.
