Recap: Masters Championship in Spain
The Team Canada Masters National women 48's team won gold at the IVVA World Indoor Championship in Mallorca, Spain Oct 2 to 7, 2023.
The five countries participating were Canada, Czech Republic, Germany, Norway and Ukraine. The Canadian women’s team consist of players from BC, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Quebec. Canada's roster is Carol Barton, Izabelle Berger, Jill Fougner, Tree Hagen, Erin Hamilton, Linda McColm, Annie Menard and Melany Tomyn. The team is coached by George Tokarsky from Alberta.
In the round robin Canada beat Team Germany 2-0, struggled and lost Team Czech 0-2 and then beat Team Norway 2-0 and Team Ukraine 2-0 over the first three days. That put Canada in the semifinals on Friday against Germany and the Czech Republic against Ukraine in the other semi. Both Canada and Czech won their semis 2-0 and it was on to the gold final on Saturday. Afterwards our middle Izabelle Berger in a freak accident dislocated her right elbow.
In a very exciting final, Czech won the first set and Canada won the second set and then after rearranging the roster for the third set, Canada won the gold to end the match with an ace by Melany Tomyn. The Canadian team’s setter Jill Fougner, a former Senior National team player 1982-83, directed the offence and with many booming spikes from Erin Hamilton.
